Abstract

This research aims at how the setting of the movie Moonlight affected the main character's choice to self-identify as gay. This study applied the qualitative approach to the data and Judith Butler's queer theory to determine the analysis. The author gathered data using depth analysis and evaluated the movie to offer a huge amount of supporting data. Three conclusions can be drawn from this investigation. The first is that the main character's peer group's school and family environments influenced him to be a homosexual. The second, performativity as a homosexual or gay are seen as in recognition, utterances, appearance, and sexual activities. The final issues the main character has as a gay in a heterosexual culture are hiding, social punishment, and disclosing.
