Paralinguistic Realization in Exchange of Actor/Actresses in the Movie “Step up 2 the Streets

Abstract

Key words: Language use, verbal and non verbal expression, paralanguage.

 

The study attempts to research Paralinguistic in the movie “Step up 2 the Streets”. The writer tries to give what the native speaker means in such paralinguistic realization. Paralinguistic used by the main characters during their interaction in the movie “Step up 2 the Streets”. The meaning of paralanguage used by the characters in the movie “Step up 2 the Streets” has been foreshadowed in the review of related literature.

All paralanguage found in the movie “Step up 2 the Streets” was taken as the data. The writer downloaded the script of the movie “Step up 2the Streets” and qualitative technique is used to explain the paralanguage and the meaning

Four hundred and thirty types of paralanguage were found in selected data. The speaker mostly use falling intonation (33.5%) and loud tone (24.4%) because of the setting and social background. Other paralanguage colored the use of paralanguage in Step up 2 the Streets are rising intonation (10%), soft tone (20.5%), crying (0.7%), screaming (2.8%), yelling (20%), gasping (0.9%), mmmhhh (0.2%), sssttt (0.2%), and un-huh (2.1%).
