Complainer in C.S Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia The Voyage of the Dawn Treader: as a Psychoanalysis Study.

Abstract

This material object of the research is a novel entitled the Chronicles of Narnia the Voyage of the Dawn Treader composed by C.S Lewis and the formal object is complainer. According to material object and formal object the writer choses the thesis entitled “Complainer in C.S Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia the Voyage of the Dawn Treader: as a Psychoanalysis Study.” The writer applies psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud to analyze the novel.

The data was analyzed on the theory of psychoanalysis by Freud to find out the characteristic and personality of Eustace Srubb as main character in the novel the Chronicles of Narnia the Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The writer found the characteristics of Eustace, the conflicts of Eustace and Eustace as a complainer analyzed by applying Freudian psychoanalysis.

The writer conducted the study with the purpose to find out the characteristic of Eustace, to find out the conflicts of Eustace and to find out Eustace as complainer analyzed applying Freudian psychoanalysis.

The characteristics of Eustace are rebellious, greedy, jealous, and cooperative. External conflict of Eustace is found between Eustace and Caspian who is helped by Reepicheep. The effect of this conflict is Eustace feels angry and annoyed with Caspian and Reepicheep. The second external conflict is between Eustace and Reepicheep. The effect of this conflict is they often argue. Internal conflict of Eustace is he feels loneliness because he changes into a dragon. Id of Eustace is he only concerned with his food and water to drink. Ego of Eustace is he complains when he only gets less food than anyone and when he feels terribly thirsty all evening. Superego of Eustace is Eustace could have been steal some food from the others crew, but he does not do that. Projection of Eustace is he blames the situation where he asks Caspian why Lucy gets a nice room on deck on herself. Eustace bestows his problems to Caspian and Lucy. Regression of Eustace is complaining in the form of crying. It shows that Eustace acts as a 5 year-old little boy.
