Robinson’s Struggles to Survive on a Desert Island in Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe

Abstract

Key words: struggle, survive, psychological condition.

 

This study analyzes Robinson’s struggles to survive on a Desert Island reflected in Robinson Crusoe novel directed by Daniel Defoe.The objectives of the studies are to analyze the character and characterization, the struggles and the psychological condition of the main character.

Analyzing a novel should not only be done by reading the story, but also by knowing and understanding the elements. There are intrinsic and extrinsic elements in this story. One of the intrinsic elements is character and characterization. The extrinsic element in this story is psychological condition.

The main character in the novel “Robinson Crusoe” is Robinson Crusoe. He is a stubborn boy who has a dream to go on sea voyages. Because of being stubborn, he is stranded on a desert island. The situation and the condition on this island affect his psychological condition. Every day he suffers because of the situation and condition of the island. He lives alone without anyone helping him. So he must struggle to survive his life on this island.

The result of the analysis reveals that the main character has many changes in his characters after he is stranded on a desert island. He becomes a good person. He has good behavior and personality. Since he lives on this island and he has to solve some problem, he becomes patient, a hard worker, and a religious person. This island has changed him to be better.
