https://www.unisbank.ac.id/ojs/index.php/fbib1/article/view/10022

This study seeks to look into the impact of group discussions on the writing skills of grade X students, specifically focusing on recount texts at SMA Negeri 2 Kendal. This study aims to achieve the following objectives: (1) to gauge the writing skills of students regarding recount text when instruction is delivered without the incorporation of group discussion; (2) to evaluate the writing skills of students concerning recount text when instruction includes group discussion; and (3) to analyze the significant differences in students' writing skills on recount text between the two instructional approaches, namely without and with group discussion. This study relied on a quantitative technique and adopted a quasi-experimental design for its research probe. The data collection process involved the utilization of both pre-test and post-test equipment. The analysis of the data was conducted utilizing the IBM SPSS version 27. The analysis of the data indicated that students who engaged in group discussions demonstrated superior performance compared to those who did not participate in such discussions. The students participating in the experimental class achieved an average score of 56.97 on the pre-test, which increased to 73.46 on the post-test. This suggests that a significant disparity exists between students who received instruction that included group discussions and those who did not engage in such collaborative learning experiences.

Keywords: Writing, Recount Text, Group Discussion.
Dea Nurul Istiqomah, Siti Lestari, Sri Wahyuni

https://www.unisbank.ac.id/ojs/index.php/fbib1/article/view/9961

The objective of this research is to identify the types and the most dominant type of illocutionary acts used by the character of Edmund Pevensie in the novel The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. This study employed John Searle's theory of illocutionary acts. According to this theory, illocutionary speech acts are categorized into five types: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. A qualitative descriptive method was utilized in this research, with observation as the instrument and data tables for analysis. The data collected consisted of utterances made by the character Edmund Pevensie to examine the types of illocutionary acts. Based on the research findings, the researcher found 64 assertive utterances, 38 directive utterances, 8 commissive utterances, and 5 expressive utterances. Subsequently, a percentage calculation was conducted for the identified types. The results showed that 56% were assertive, 33% were directive, 7% were commissive, and 4% were expressive. Then, based on the analysis the most dominant type used by Edmund is the assertive type.

Keywords: speech acts, illocutionary acts, Narnia novel, Edmund Pevensie

Zennia Laouisa Yuradana

https://www.unisbank.ac.id/ojs/index.php/fbib1/article/view/10098

Living in a multicultural and multilingual society, on one hand, provides individuals with opportunities to expand their social network, enhance cultural understanding and adopt new language. However, on the other hand, this can lead to language shift, interchangeably called language change, in which individuals gradually abandon their mother tongue in favor of a more dominant language. This paper investigates the phenomenon of language change in the 2004 movie entitled “Spanglish” The research employs qualitative research design, describing the dialog based on the movie. It is expected that this research can contribute to develop an understanding of the dynamic nature of language, and to the educators and researcher for further research.

Keywords: Language change, factors influencing, multicultural, Multilingual, Spanglish, Language shift.
Stefany Agustina, Andrias Yulianto

https://www.unisbank.ac.id/ojs/index.php/fbib1/article/view/10076

This study examines Whitney Houston’s song “The Greatest Love of All” through the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) lens, focusing on the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions outlined by M.A.K. Halliday. The analysis, employing a qualitative methodology, reveals how the lyrics articulate self-empowerment, personal growth, and societal responsibility themes. The ideational metafunction emphasizes the representation of encounters, such as the significance of sustaining future eras and grasping self-love and its transformative potential. The interpersonal metafunction highlights the relationship flow between the singer and the gathering of people, utilizing a high disposition of revelation and methodology to motivate certainty and specialization. In the meantime, the printed metafunction ensures topical coherence and consistency through structural harmony. Thus, revealing the etymological processes in the song, this thought demonstrates how music acts as a powerful means of expressing the passionate and ideological messages that resonate within it.

Keywords: Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), Language Metafunctions, Self-Improvement, Lyric Analysis, Ideological Messages in Music
Eka Puji Rahayu, Dewi Puspitasari, Agnes Widyaningrum

https://www.unisbank.ac.id/ojs/index.php/fbib1/article/view/10078

This research investigates students' experiences during presentations, focusing on the challenges they face and the strategies they employ to overcome them. The study aims to provide deeper insights into the barriers students encounter when presenting, as well as the strategies they use to address these challenges effectively. The research uses a qualitative approach, with data collected from six students in the English department at a university in Central Java through online interviews. The results of the study reveal that the participants face several barriers, such as the fear of judgment, physical symptoms of anxiety, uncertainty about the topic, and difficulties in creating effective and interactive presentation media. To overcome these obstacles, the participants use various strategies, including thorough preparation (such as creating PowerPoint slides), practicing their presentations, and seeking feedback from peers or instructors. Other strategies involve using self-affirmation, incorporating humor or jokes to engage the audience, and snapping fingers to help refocus and break awkward moments. These findings highlight the importance of preparation and coping mechanisms to manage anxiety and ensure effective communication during presentations.

Vanesa Karin, Yulistiyanti Yulistiyanti, Rafila Kasamira Dewi Abrori
